Eifel Rally 2013: 40 Years of WRC Rallying

This year’s Eifel Rally (July 25-27, 2013) celebrates forty years of the World Rally Championship. The entry list is filling up fast, with the group for course-opening cars already packed solid.

“These are cars whose family trees are not as rigorously inspected as other Slowly Sideways cars in the 130-strong entry”, said festival organiser, Peter Schlömer. “A few minutes after posting the entry form, the group was full – the enthusiast owners had been waiting to sign up.”

Well they might, for the Eifel has become Europe’s must-attend event for classic rally fans. This year’s rally will run to the tried and tested schedule, with a Thursday evening shakedown before the proper stages on Friday and Saturday. Rally highlights include:

  • Walter Röhrl as patron of the event
  • Participants from twelve countries
  • Vehicles from at least 20 manufacturers and 5 decades of rallying history
  • Open air cinema showing rally films from H. Deimel
  • All-gravel Bosch Super Stage

The Eifel Rallye Festival 2013 begins on Thursday, July 25, with a shakedown in the evening before the ‘proper’ stages on Friday and Saturday. The shakedown will take place across the Mantaloch stage near Bruck, where the cars will congregate around a paddock in the town centre.

All the cars will be scrutineered Friday morning on the ‘Rally Mile’ in the centre of Daun, allowing plenty of time to see the cars and meet the drivers. Friday action kicks off on the gravel Bosch Super Stage in the afternoon, followed by a Tarmac stage as night falls. Saturday continues the action, with the rally ending that evening.

Daun is in West Germany: an easy 90-kilometre drive from Spa and just 30 kms from the Nürburgring. If you’ve not been to the Eifel before, put this one on your list.
