WEVO's Streetlite clutch and flywheel package fitted to The Hulk's 3.0 High Butterfly engine. This is the most extreme engine to date in TwinSpark Racing's collection. We build this engine in-house using the parts we market.
The other day I walked into Ton’s engine building room to catch up on the final RSR engine we needed to build. The Hulk’s 3.0 RSR, twinplug, Schrick cammed, centerlube, high butterfly power plant. Every time Ton puts one of these engines together there are little surprises which slow down the process. It’s usually down to his meticulous attitude (which borders on the obsessive at times) that we experience slight delays, but they are always justified. Waltz over his concerns at your peril. Listen to his observations and your engine will run perfectly for many happy years. This time we needed to get the bearing housing for the centerlube cams machined. George, our in-house precision machining specialist, is drowning in work and we just have to wait our turn…
This engine had just received its clutch package. As we want to use as many of the parts we sell for our performance engines as possible, we went with WEVO’s Streetlite set up. It’s not the lightest clutch/flywheel option available: WEVO/AP also sell a Superlite version. However, we believe the Streetlite version to be the most suitable for the majority of our clients and we want to gain experience with that product first hand.
Ton felt that this package took a little longer to put together than the Sachs Sport clutch we have used so far, but the quality of the material is worth the effort. The Streetlite clutch is a bespoke design by Hayden Burvill and manufactured exclusively for WEVO by AP. Visually appealing, this set up has a blue housing engraved with our logo. The flywheel, on the other hand, is a bit lighter than standard, but not a radical design. For more info go to WEVO’s Clutch Products
Working with quality oriented people like Hayden and Ton is a delight in that you are sucked into a world of knowledge that you don’t find anywhere in the books by Anderson, Dempsey and the like. There is a great abyss to drop into when treating a 3.0 RSR engine build as a standard process, run from books. It’s all down to observing minute tolerances to preserve the internal balance of the engine and extreme care when putting together the parts. I have unfortunately seen the effects of less patient engine building by previous suppliers in the form of cracked heads because valve guides were improperly replaced and a single bent intake valve, which meant it got grazed when closing the engine.
Hail to the dentist types who chose to become Porsche mechanics instead!
