TwinSpark Racing's Woodstock on the dummy grid for race 3, with Silverado in Race Dress to its left, with Lex Proper at the wheel.
As promised I would get back with some more stories around the Historic Zandvoort Trophy of a few weeks ago. The Saturday was a nice surprise, but the Sunday went very well also. There were two races on Sunday with the same field participating. In Saturday’s race I was still getting used to the car and lost second place to the 71 2,5 liter ST. I didn’t realize I came in 3rd on Saturday until the marshalls waved me through to the pitlane for the prize giving. It turned out that the ’74 RSR had been black flagged for loosing oil on the track…
On Sunday morning I started 3rd on the grid with the lightning fast Zakspeed Escort in front of me and the ST next to me. The red and yello RSR had made repairs overnight and started all the way at the back. This is a monster car though and soon after the start he had scythed through the field and ended up next to me. With the ST in his path he tried to overtake on the straight and misshifted, giving me a few hundred meters of 2nd position as he held up the ST, but then he was gone. The ST started having shift problems on Saturday and during the Sunday morning race ruined its gearbox completely. That left me running in third, a position I managed to hold until the finish.
As you watch the video I’d like you to enjoy the way the engine picks up, sounds and goes all the way to 7.500 revs at various instances. The shift action thanks to the WEVO 915 shifter, Precision Joint and gateshift kit is very swift and smooth. When I replayed the movie I could sometimes hardly hear the transition from 2 to 3.
The afternoon race presented a new challenge. I had misjudged the track temperature and left a few tenths too much pressure in tires. This made the car handles less solidly in the turns and and I could not hit the throttle upon exit like I did in the two earlier races. This allowed Theo Mouws’ Escort to get closer now that he had started further ahead on the grid, having qualified poorly on Saturday. Our friends in the bleechers had a great time watching a close race in which Theo and I swapped third position 3 times! Ultimately I started driving my lines too tightly and focussed too little on making pace, rather than keeping Theo behind me. After I caught him upon braking into the last round, Theo passed me 6 turns before the finish, as I lost traction in that corner and drifted into the gravel trap for a second. That gave him 50 meters of space and made him the deserved winner of the third prize in race 3.
We ended up 3rd overall halfway through the championship and 1st in class. Now we need to niggle Woodstock further to make sure we remain competitive in September!
Just finished uploading this video of race 2, after a few edits. I took out the middle section, where I was driving between the two leaders and the rest of the field.
