Last weekend saw the start of the historic racing season for team TwinSpark with a few thrilling races at Zandvoort. Our Dutch Historic Racing Championship 66-81 saw a field of 34 cars head into qualification and 25 cars finishing the weekend’s last race. Quite an improvement in numbers compared to last year.

We believe that more and more drivers are gravitating towards classes which insist on FIA homologation compliant cars and the fair competition to match. Our races could not have proven the point of fairness better, looking at the bumper to bumper battle yours truly undertook with a very similar car of Jan van Elderen and fights going on in the group of Escorts behind us. After a harrowing morning on the final regularity and a driving test on closed track in Austria we have finished Winter Trial 2013 in one piece.

The Regularity this morning posed as many challenges as we expected, based on our experience of earlier years. After 1,2 km out of 33km total, we took an early turn and as luck has it, not only was this the wrong road, but I hit a bit of soft snow taking the first turn and ended up back end first in a meadow with deep snow. Even Silverado’s 210 horses had to surrender to the forces of snow and gravity and we were officially stuck!

Today the Winter Trial presented us with 5 Regularities, 1 Navigation Test and two speed tests. A true test of grit and concentration. We started the day in corrected 4th position, still in contention for the podium. With so many events in one day and truly icy surfaces to cover the expectation was for a shake up in the classifications. There were too many possibilities to pick up penalties and big offs.

As we got into our rhythm today we had good hopes to stay in the game. The test at Nordring in Austria was mostly covered in thick snow and presented a chance to beach oneself… We just wanted to play it a bit safe to make sure we ended up with a decent time and avoid big penalties when getting stuck in a snow wall.
