Here’s a terrific scrap between a pair of Porsche 911 RSRs during the recent Youngtimer Trophy at Zolder.
The cars are fighting for the lead. In front is the white Team Mittelmotor car of Charles Voggenreiter, chasing is the purple car of Dr. Edgar Althoff.
If you thought historic racing was a nice way to stretch the legs of a retired older 911, this video will put you straight. The drivers put their cars through hell: sliding, braking later than they dare, sliding, banging gears and almost but not quite banging door handles too.
The white car is leaking oil onto the exhaust, hence the smoke. You can see the effect it has on Althoff’s windscreen. Voggenreiter slides off the track and still manages to be in the way enough to block the purple car, which is obviously faster through the chicanes.
Part of me wonders why Edgar doesn’t just hold onto a gear slightly longer, but there is definitely a reason. After all these are not amateurs! Dr. Althoff has finished on the podium of the modern Nurburgring 24-Hour in a 911 GT3.
The reason is: he can smell victory. Edgar eventually wins Race 2, but is beaten to fastest lap by a 911 Turbo. A few weeks later, Voggenreiter wins the Youngtimer Race at the ADAC Spa Historics.
I love a bit of needle: this is just great! Wish I’d been there to see it: gets epic when it switches to in-car.
