TwinSpark Racing’s Development 911 RSR

"Woodstock" the 1973 911S/RSR

“Woodstock” has been with us for 3 years now and has gone through a constant upgrade process. It is an original 1973 911S chassis which has been modified to RSR spec over the years.

The nickname “Woodstock” was given recently by TwinSpark’s business manager, Daan Stolk, and refers to the Charlie Brown character, particularly to his color…

We acquired the chassis in 2006 from a German car trader. It came with an ONS pass which showed it had competed actively in the German Youngtimer Trophy. Unfortunately its then owner abandoned the RSR at shop after he was faced with a repair bill which he couldn’t pay. Subsequently the engine, gearbox and all of the interior were sold off by the repair shop, to cover the bill. The suspension remained however and in that barren state the car was moved to the shop where we bought it. Step by step the chassis was completed with the bits that were missing (nearly everything) and over the years it has become a familiar vehicle at Zandvoort.

Woodstock in Audi S Curve

We have participated in the Dutch Winter Endurance Championship of 2008/2009 and were the oldest car in the field. Despite its age and basic engine spec at the time, we drove Woodstock to finishing positions at two thirds from the top. This Open Class series allowed us to test the chassis in 4 hour endurance races, where learning rather than wining was the initial objective.

Fairly soon it became apparent that the chassis needed to be repaired. The torsion tube which had been fitted in the past was out of vertical alignment, which meant we were running too high a stance and too much negative camber in the rear. Over the Christmas recess of 2008 the torsion tube was cut out and replaced by a proper one. Now the suspension can be set at variable heights and cambers.

Recently the 3.0 SC engine on Webers was replaced by a mild 3.0 RSR engine on MFI and S cams. When the salt disappears from the streets we will be breaking the engine in. In the last few months our mechanic has installed a Tuthill competition wiring loom, which removes all unnecessary wiring and places all the fuses and relais in the dashboard. We have mounted dual Tuthill Messerschmitt fuel pumps in the smuggler’s box as a contingency measure.
