Part 1 of our Spring Spa story ended as we arrived at the circuit. After a nice lunch – Spa sure knows how to feed people – we unloaded the car and went out to warm up the slicks the car had been fitted with.
Lex is racing Woodstock this year, on slicks. Leonard is not a slick expert, preferring the progressive TBs that the car usually runs on. As the sun kept shining, the laps piled up.
Eventually, it was time for our newest employee. Gerwin, to take his first ride in a Porsche: on track in an RSR at Spa. I’m sure whatever Leonard had planned for the occasion, it wasn’t what actually happened.
Coming through the second part of Pouhon – a very fast downhill left-hander – the car had a moment on the lower profile slicks and began to drift sideways. As Leonard dialled in some countersteering, the rear tyres suddenly grabbed and the steering angle sent our hero heading towards the tyre wall. Once the car hit the marbles there was no stopping the inevitable. It was *crunch* time.
After recovering to the pits, Leonard’s pride was bruised but no bones were broken. Damage to the car wasn’t too bad: it had been a relatively low speed shunt. We loaded the car, had a drink and then headed for home.
Back in Amsterdam, we rolled Woodstock off the trailer while Leonard insisted to Lex that he had not been texting and driving. Lex’s face here (left, above) says it all.
As you would expect, the evening did not end there. We stripped the front end, to check the damage and build a picture of how much work needs doing to fix it. Answer: not much. If nothing else, it’s a good excuse to change a few more bits. “And put TBs back on it,” said Leonard.
