We just arrived at our hotel in Weimar after a day with 170 km of highways to get to the East, mixed with three tests at Twente Airport and four 15km regularity section. A good day to get back into the rythm, because the regularity sections were set on icy, snowy side-roads. Lethal conditions as even one of the Irish competitors, Frank Fennell, who does nothing but rallying, drilled himself into a ditch a few minutes ahead of us. Not something we could fix, but definitely a nice job for the rescue crew with a 4×4!
Our test this morning consisted of three sections and included icy, snowy and asphalt sections and it was a hoot as usual. We had two small misses, which cost us a few seconds, but where last year we had many offs due to abundant risks being taken, this year we have decided to take it a bit easier in the icy corners. Please enjoy some of the cockpit action in this movie! Tomorrow I will raise the camera somewhat to get a better view of the surroundings.
Our team is having its first set backs. Cooper Goei and Rene Middelweerd, in their 1971 911S Targa, are still MIA on a regularity section and waiting to be found by the sweeper 4×4. Dick Roesing and Aloys Tersteege in their Volvo BV 544 are having trouble with their alternator and/or wiring loom and they are limping this way at the moment.
As we entered the garage of the hotel tonight, I recognised a famous face a few births down. The bearded face of Jürgen Barth was there, having driven a Volvo Amazon to Weimar. Great to see such a legend participate in this adventure.
Let’s see how the scores pan out tomorrow morning, but we seem to have found our rhythm. All we have to do is keep it and stay well rested. Good job by my co-driver today, missing only a few slight tricks by the the organizers. More tomorrow!
