Story of Spa: TwinSpark Racing in Total 911

The story of our June track day, where twenty-five air-cooled Porsche 911s came to Spa Francorchamps race track, features in this month’s Total 911 magazine. The mag has done a superb job on layout and design, and the piece really captures the positive atmosphere that surrounds an upbeat gathering of classic Porsche fans, at an equally classic circuit.

The piece talks the reader around a lap of Spa, as experienced from the front seat of Woodstock, TwinSpark’s 3.0 RSR. With Leonard driving, we chased, passed, got repassed and then rehunted a brilliant white 997 GT3 around the circuit for 5 or 6 laps, before coming in to get our breath back and stop laughing. Too much fun really.

My article encompasses the passenger sensations, as well as guidance on the perfect lap here from Ron Simons. Ron was our track day partner via his company RSR Nurburg, and has done a ridiculous number of laps at Spa as a racer and instructor. Here’s an excerpt from the piece:

Ron Simons briefing Part 1. Part 2 is a track tour.

“Now almost five kilometres into the lap, the thrills keep coming. We’ve dropped 100 metres in elevation since Les Combes and we fly through Stavelot 1 and 2. Tucked under the tail of the white GT3, Ron’s words are ringing in my ears. “This is the most important corner on the track. Speed maintained here is more speed all the way down the back straight. Sacrifice revs to minimise fuss and drama during and after the exit: short shift to fourth between the two corners and pin the pedal to the floor.”

TwinSpark brought G-model 911s to Spa also

As Leonard does just that, we emerge tucked under the tail of the on-it GT3. This is where the early car might pick up an advantage. “996 GT3s can go flat through Blanchimont 1, but not the latest 997 versions. They are just too fast.” Sure enough, the GT3 brakes, whereas we get ‘round with a hint of lift and back on the gas. It’s enough to make the difference. Touching the brakes for Blanchimont 2 before screaming the RSR back down the straight, we’re in front.” Fun!!

We are looking into the possibility of repeating the event next year so, if it sounds like your sort of thing, then get on our mailing list and keep in touch with our tour and travel plans as they evolve. Don’t worry about these events applying any sort of peer pressure to be the fastest guy on track: nothing could be further from the truth. They’re a relaxed gathering of friends old and new, all set on enjoying the cars in a safe environment. We like courtesy and consideration: trusting all other owners on track to want the same safety for their vehicles!
