I’ve just finished a feature for Total 911 magazine on a good friend of mine in the USA who has a very nice three-car 911 collection. Needless to say, he’s an R Gruppe member, so one of his cars is an early 911, tuned for an exciting drive, but with standard looks up top. It’s the Sports Purpose way.

One of the points my friend made in the interview for this feature is that most people are now building homage cars, following factory looks from the good old days: RS, RSR, ST, 911R and all the variations in between. What he feels is missing is the next big thing in modified classic Porsche, in a similar way to the US hot rodders who customise cars like the Ford Model As, and the evolution of their styles from year to year. The story of our June track day, where twenty-five air-cooled Porsche 911s came to Spa Francorchamps race track, features in this month’s Total 911 magazine. The mag has done a superb job on layout and design, and the piece really captures the positive atmosphere that surrounds an upbeat gathering of classic Porsche fans, at an equally classic circuit.

The piece talks the reader around a lap of Spa, as experienced from the front seat of Woodstock, TwinSpark’s 3.0 RSR. With Leonard driving, we chased, passed, got repassed and then rehunted a brilliant white 997 GT3 around the circuit for 5 or 6 laps, before coming in to get our breath back and stop laughing. Too much fun really.

My article encompasses the passenger sensations, as well as guidance on the perfect lap here from Ron Simons. Ron was our track day partner via his company RSR Nurburg, and has done a [...]

What started as a nervous week full of last minute preparation, ended well with a satisfying class victory  for Team TwinSpark Racing on Sunday. Outgunned by low-flying Escorts and other more radical RSR’s, we scored a 4, 4 and 5 out of 22 cars, enough to add the points we needed for the Class championship.

The competing red and yellow ’74 911 RSR of Rolph Smulders crashed in lap two of qualifying, right in front of me, coming out of the Renault corner. Rolph bent the left front seriously, but got out without a scratch. However sad for him, this is what can happen when the pressure for the championship is on. We all go all out and that puts you over the edge on occasion…

Lex was driving the Hulk, our ’74 911 RSR, with a new radical engine. Unfortunately we had had no time to fine tune the settings of the engine and this [...]
