I drove an interesting car the other day. It was a Porsche 911 – Type 964 – backdated to give some early-style looks with modern day creature comforts. In some ways, the 964 was a bit of a mismatch of style and shapes but one area where it did itself proud was the engine.
964 engines have a good name among specialists. The bottom end of a 964 engine is said to be more robust than the 993 motor – especially when boost is introduced – and the one I drove felt as strong as an ox. That might have had something to do with the new Porsche Motorsport pistons and barrels fitted from a 3.8-litre 993 RS engine, along with camshafts from a 993 Cup car.

- Comments Off on Porsche 911 Carrera RS at Essen Techno Classica
Tomorrow morning, we drive from the UK to Essen for the 2012 Techno Classica. Porsche has just released details of a greatly increased AG presence at the event, which I’m really looking forward to seeing. Here’s their update:

To mark the occasion, Porsche is presenting two racing versions of the 911 Carrera RS from the Porsche Museum at the new location in [...]

Issue Two of Ferdinand magazine – the FREE digital-only Porsche magazine – features the Viper Green Porsche 911 RSR of TwinSpark Racing’s Leonard Stolk, photographed by yours truly at the recent TwinSpark track day at Spa Francorchamps.
Ferdinand’s art team have made a great job of presenting the story and pics in an eye-catching way. Though the magazine is only available in English, the pics alone make compelling viewing. None of the pics seen here are in the piece – you will have to access the mag to check them out.
The same issue features the story of our patron, Gijs van Lennep, and his Porsche 917 at Rennsport. This is the same car Gijs drove with David Piper in the 1970 Le Mans. Again, [...]
